Frequently Asked Questions

-Why KJC?

We are here for you in order to provide a professional music education.  As our adviser, Dr. Gene Aitken (www.geneaitken.com) has said, "This music school is at the level of many universities in the USA."

-Why KJC is different from other music schools?

Very simple: we put our savings to make this dream possible and we care about your education.  If you care as well, you can bet that we will give you all you need to succeed in the music business.  We have developed a curriculum that is the same as many music schools and universities in the US and Europe.  We are not offering classes that we cannot teach; we are professionals and know our limitations.

-What about KJC's faculty?

Our faculty comes from all over the world.  Since Nov. 2007 we have had teachers from Nepal, USA, Brazil, Curaçao, Spain, the Netherlands, Norway, and Canada.  We only hire music teachers who have a music degree or have enough experience in teaching.  We also train Nepali students to become teachers in our institution.

-And your facilities?

All our facilities are state-of-the-art.  We have the best instruments available in the market.  We have 5 practice rooms, a music listening lab, MIDI room, one acoustic piano, professional drum sets, high quality amplifiers, guitars, bass, etc....we have the best for you!  All our rooms are sound proof and protected so you do not harm your ears while practicing.  We have electricity 24hrs so you have no excuses to avoid practice.  Come and check them out; you'll feel that you are in a real music school!

-Your time?

  • If you are asking about our working ours then we are open from 10am until the last one leaves.
  • If you are asking if we like punctuality, then I will tell you that that is our religion.  If you have any complaints about classes starting late please talk to the director since we take this very seriously.

-What can you offer me?

We can offer you a proper music education in all aspects and genres of music (rock, jazz, western classical, eastern classical, pop, Nepali folk, Latin, etc.)  We guarantee you that you will learn music with us; and we will encourage you.  In fact, just KJC's environment will encourage you to practice and become better and better.

-Do you have group lessons?

No, normally we do not have group lessons but individual lessons.  We believe that you learn much more if you work one-on-one with your teacher.  It can be argued that with group lessons you can learn from other students, and that is why we offer ensembles where you can learn how to play in a group setting, learning how to hear the other instruments and what to do.  We have many ensembles that you can join:  a guitar ensemble, a close harmony choir, a big band, a pop ensemble, a rock ensemble, teen ensemble, several jazz combos, etc.

-Your prices are high in comparison to other music schools.

You are right; but you cannot compare us with other music schools.  We have EVERYTHING you need and if we do not have it you just let us know and we will!  We are not funded by any organization, and to maintain our quality of education requires a great deal.  But in fact, we believe that when you take into account everything that you will receive by being a KJC student, the cost of your studies with us represents the wisest investment you can make in yourself.

-Why do foreigners have to pay more?

Simply because you are helping us to keep this level of education.  10% of your fees go to scholarships to Nepali underprivileged students.  You are helping them to have a proper music education, something that they did not have before.

-Does KJC offer scholarships?

Yes we do but only if you really need it.  We believe that everyone has talent for music, so just because you are talented you are not going to get a scholarship.  You need to prove that you have financial difficulties and that you will fully commit to the scholarship's requirements.  The money we have for scholarships is from fundraising concerts we do and other activities.  These funds do not come for free.

-I am a musician and want to become a teacher, can you help me?

Yes we can.  We have a training program where we train you to become a professional music teacher.  Please ask us!

-I have no experience in music, which instrument should I start with?

If a person is above 6 year old they can start taking private lessons. For some instruments (guitar, bass, voice, saxophone, trumpet, clarinet, flute and oboe) they have to talk to the instructor since the maybe be too small yet for the instrument.                     It is good to start with Piano because it is a friendly instrument, you press a key and it makes a sound.  It is easy to play easy melodies as well.

-Do you teach only jazz music?

We teach all genres (styles) of music.  Jazz is for advance students.  We teach rock, pop, Western classical, Hindustani, etc.

-I have to leave for 3 months. Will I get my class at same day and time when I come back?

You can reserve your class schedule for three months. For which you will have to pay half month’s fee for 3 months.  Or if you don’t reserve the place you will have to reschedule your class once you come back.

-I’m not a student of KJC. Can I use any room for practice?

No, we are sorry.  We only allow our students to use our facilities.

-I don’t have my own instrument. Can I take class?

Yes. We provide you with the instrument (on guitar, piano, drums and bass only) to take your class and you can come to KJC for practice in your free time. But call us before coming to make sure the room and instrument is free.
