Teaching Opportunities
The Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory is a new center for musical studies which opened in the fall of 2007 in the sub-metropolitan city of Lalitpur, just outside Kathmandu, Nepal. Mariano E. Abello, one of the founding members and its director, has been an active member of the Nepali music scene since 2005. Mariano has observed that Nepal is a country full of very talented, mostly self-taught musicians who have not had the opportunity to undertake formal music education due to a lack of music schools that are adequately staffed or equipped. The Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory is dedicated to the erasure of this educational disparity, offering Nepalis the chance to receive a proper, well-rounded music education, not focusing exclusively on jazz but on all genres, including Eastern and Western classical music.
To achieve its goals, the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory needs the help of guest music teachers or advanced music students who want to experience life and music in one of the most fascinating cities in the world. The Conservatory can provide guest teachers with accommodation, a housekeeper, a salary, the opportunity to play with different Nepali bands and education in Eastern classical music—including applied lessons on an instrument of your choice—from some of the best musicians in Nepal. The curriculum is based around three trimesters, each 4 months long (January to April; May to August; September to December). Teaching hours will be no more than four hours per day, from Tuesday to Sunday.
The Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory is currently looking for guest teachers to assist with:
A BA in music is desirable, but not essential. Prior experience teaching and performing is required. For more information contact Mariano E. Abello at mariano@katjazz.com.np.
