Curriculum

  • Basics For Youth and Adults

A program developed for youths and adults with no musical knowledge. These four levels lead the students to the School Diploma’s curriculum.

 

     -4 Levels of Instrument:

-levels 1 and 2 can be group lessons 2 classes of 45’per week or private lessons of 30’or 60’once a week      
-levels 3 and 4 are private lessons

- Theory, Rhythm and Ear Training: 1 class per week

- Instrumental Ensemble: 1 class of 60’per week

 
 

  • Curriculum to Obtain the KJC Diploma

 

This is a higher level curriculum of 2 or 3 year courses.  Students will graduate with the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory’s Diploma.

 

-Two Years Diploma:

 

            The student needs to complete four semesters of private lessons, all Music Theories, Ear Training and Sight Singing, four semesters of ensembles, Improvisation, Jazz History, Piano (one semester), History of South Asian Classical Music or a classical Instrument, MIDI (one semester) and two recitals.

 

-Three Years Diploma:

 

            Students need to complete six semesters of private lessons, all Music Theories, Ear Training and Sight Singing, six semesters of ensemble, Improvisation, Jazz History, Piano (two semesters), Jazz Theory and Arranging, MIDI (one semester), History of South Asian Classical Music, Jazz Styles and Analysis, Classical Instrument, and two recitals.

 

  • KJC Commercial Music Program

 

Step by step program to learn the art of recording, sound engineering, computer music sequencing, music notation program.  The student will learn several music programs, microphone techniques, the use of the recording studio, etc.

 

 

-Music Theory Fundamentals

 

An introduction to the foundations of music notation, music theory, and sight singing in preparation for Music Theory.

-Music Theory I,II,III

The goal of this class is to familiarize all students with the rudiments of musical notation through the step-by-step ascent through three levels of theory. This class is mandatory for all music students.

Requirement: to pass to the next level you need to complete the previous one.

Music Theory I: An introduction to the foundations of music theory including elementary sight singing, dictation and four-part writing.

Music Theory II: A continuation of theory I including writing and analysis of all diatonic vocabulary and an introduction of the chromatic vocabulary through the study of secondary dominant function.

Music Theory III: A continuation of theory II including an in-depth study, with emphasis on part-writing, including modulation.

-Sight Singing and Ear Training I,II,III

Development of aural skills through the study of sight singing, musical dictation and keyboard exercises.  This class in mandatory to all music students. 

Requirement: complete Music Theory I.

-Jazz Improvisation I,II

An intensive study of jazz improvisation through classroom performance on voice or instrument. Emphasis will be placed on scales, chords, modes, harmonic progressions and musical patterns which are common to the jazz repertoire.

Requirement: complete Music Theory I or pass the Placement Test.

-Jazz Theory and Arranging I,II

The first section will cover arranging for small ensembles, the continuation will emphasize arranging for large jazz band. 

Requirement: complete Music Theory I and II or pass Placement Test.

-Jazz Styles and Analysis

A study of jazz styles from the Bebop era to the present. Includes analysis of transcribed solos as recorded by major jazz artists; development of aural recognition of contemporary harmonic and linear musical vocabularies.

 Requirement: complete Improvisation I.

 

-Ensembles

Ensemble groups range in size from 2 to 10 members. Students will gain proficiency in ensemble playing and improvisation. Groups perform at least once each semester.  This class is mandatory for all students who are taking private lessons.

 

-Jazz Repertoire studied includes jazz standards in all pertinent styles, including but not limited to swing, latin, rock, funk and ballads.

 

-Blues Repertoire studied includes basic blues forms to actual blues.

 

-Funk & Rock Repertoire studies include the classics of R&B, Rock and Funk.

 

-Chamber Music Repertoire studied includes different classical periods in duos, trio, quartets, and quintets.

 

-Saxophone Ensemble This ensemble will work on intonation and other aspects of saxophone playing.  The ensemble will work on Classical and Jazz repertoire.

 

-Flute Ensemble This ensemble will work on intonation and other aspects of flute playing.  The ensemble will work on Classical and Jazz repertoire.

 

-Clarinet Ensemble This ensemble will work on intonation and other aspects of clarinet playing.  The ensemble will work on Classical and Jazz repertoire.

 

-Guitar Ensemble Especially for guitarists and bassists who can not yet play in an ensemble.  The ensemble will work on improvisation, chords, and mainly jazz repertoire.

 

-Percussion Ensemble This ensemble will work on different styles i.e. Afro Cuban, Hindustani, Samba, Son, etc. using different percussive instruments.

 

 

-Private Instrument

 

      All students from 8 year-old are required to take at least one private lesson of their main instrument for 30’ or 60’.

South Asian (Indian) Classical Music Program

 

1.         INTRODUCTION

Music, from earliest times, has been an important expression of human creativity. Today it is a valued social and cultural art form that transcends language, religion and racial barrier. Music can be considered a measure that develops both internal and external beauty. Thus, music education is very important for all individuals of society. Classical music is the grammar and foundation of all kind of music which is popular in South Asian Countries. The course has been designed to provide basic knowledge of the classical music which is a common property of South Asia. 

2.         OBJECTIVES

The objective of this course is to provide basic knowledge and information to the students about Eastern classical music. The aims and the objectives in the syllabus are:

  • to provide a general education in South Asian Classical music which is also known as Indian Classical Music
  • to provide sufficient musical knowledge and understanding to enable students to practice listening and composing with greater proficiency and interest
  • to support performing skills with a more informed awareness of the related and necessary knowledge and understanding
  • to develop an understanding of how music contributes to the social, historical, technological, economic and cultural aspects of life

3.         EXPECTATIONS

While taking the course, students will be able to gain the knowledge on South Asian Classical music in both theoretical and practical aspect. The student will leave with a good knowledge of what South Asian Classical Music is about, its construction and its history. After completion of the basic course students will have the ability to sing and play their respective instrument as well as having the capability to go further if they wish.

 

  1. COURSE DESIGN

This course is mainly divided in the following two levels:

  1. Basic Level 
  2. Advance Level

The students will also focus on one of following subject (instruments) in which they will have two classes per week plus classes of different subjects to get the overall knowledge. Classes will include: eastern music theory/evolution, private lessons, eastern music notation and ensemble (how to play in an eastern music group).
