Kiran Shahi(Nepal)
Kiran Shahi (Sept 10, 1990)
It might seem unusual for a boy of a Newari background to be fascinated by something alien like 'jazz' and by bands like The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, though touched by newari rhythms in his early age. Kiran Shahi is one such drummer who grew up with music and started his musical journey in an extraordinary way: by playing rhythm in pots and buckets!
As he got introduced to his first baby drum kid at the age of twelve, he started performing in different school programs. After schooling, he went on with drums and even formed a progressive metal band named 'USHMA WEG', strongly influenced by bands like Rush, Yes and Dream Theater. He went on to perform with different local concerts with the band.
Kiran was inspired by drummers like Ringo Star and John Bonham. But, a drum solo by John Bonham, 'Moby Dick' strengthened his musical choice.
The year 2007 after joining Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory (KJC) changed everything. There he got a chance to put himself in a much more directed, devoted and disciplined way in music thereby developing deeper understanding in blues, jazz, music theories and improvisations.
He has so far received drum lessons from Antonio Alvarez and Dr. Gene Aitken. And as time went by, he is now a drum teacher at KJC.
