A new semester is starting from this May and we are offering a new course “Music History, Analysis and Composition (MHAC)” for our students to gain a solid understanding of the foundations of western music conventions and compositions. The course is designed to start out by studying how western harmony developed from quite an early point in time (Renaissance) and throughout the 4 months of semester we will cover two musical periods each month.
In this course, students are taught to analyze historical excerpts and asked to compose a short piece by using conventional compositional techniques for the relevant time period and emulate the composers of that time. For Jazz lovers, we think it’s important to learn about music history as jazz has borrowed a lot from older musical periods.
