Charlotte Jacobs
Charlotte Jacobs was born in Ghent on March 16 1989. As a seven year old she started her musical journey at the Academy of Music, Theater and Dance in Sint-Niklaas. There she studied classical voice and flute, classical and contemporary dance and theater.
In 2007 she graduated high school and started a study at the Artevelde University College in Ghent, to become a teacher in music and arts. She gratuated in 2010 with a Bachelor in Secundary Education. In her senior year she had the chance to study abroad and went on an Erasmus study. She went to Vilnius (Lithuania) where she followed contemporary dance with Giedre Subotinaite and vocal jazz ensemble with Arturas Novikas.
In 2010 she got accepted to the Royal Conservartory of Ghent for jazz vocals. She was educated by Anu Junnonen, Pierre Vaiana, Bart Defoort, Chrystel Wautier and many others. By means of the conservatory she also got the chance to follow some masterclasses of Tierney Sutton, Bob Mover and Becca Stevens.
In summer 2013 she was selected to represent the conservatory at the Ghent Jazz Festival with the band “Oogie” conducted by the great singer songwriter Becca Stevens.
In 2014, she went a short period to New York where she got to meet and learn from great musicians and songwriters as Alan Hampton, Maria Neckam, KJ Denhert and Rebecca Martin. She also got the chance to follow some group and ensemble classes at the Manhatten School of Music with Angela Beeching.
At this moment she is finishing her last master year. During her music studies she got in touch with very interesting musicians and her love for making and composing music only grew bigger.
Since 2011 she’s one of the backing vocals of the Italian / Belgian singer Sarah Ferri (gipsy swing). In 2012, together with some colleague singing students, she founded a close harmony swing band called “Midnight Blue birds & their Sentimental Gentlemen” (20s swing). Charlotte also writes her own music and in 2012 she founded her band called “LWNS” (jazz/pop/urban). With this band she was selected for some renowned musiccontests in Belgium.
In 2013 she started to collaborate with the Belgian producer Jens Paeyeneers, they released a small EP called “de mens en het water” using only voice as the instrument. In winter 2014 they started to perform this music live, in trio formation. Because of this succesfull fusion of her jazz roots and his knowledge of electronic and analogue sounds, they decided to work on a new album (together with the drummer Gert Malfliet) that is to be released in Summer 2015.
